For the performance minded you can take Old Saddle road, the rollercoaster of Big Island. You will then connect with New Saddle road gaining altitude to 6,600 feet, then drop back down on the Hilo side. Your first stop will be Rainbow Falls followed by a breathtaking drive on the Old Mamalahoa Highway until you reach the 420 foot high Akaka Falls. From there you have various options, Umauma falls, going down to Laupahoehoe, the Waipio Lookout, or shopping in Waimae town depending on time.
